2017 marks the 40th Anniversary of the epic television miniseries Roots. Based on the famous 1976 novel, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family” by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Alex Haley. Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Television Series, 37 Primetime Emmy Awards, and still holds the record for the second most watched series with a record-breaking 130 million viewers.

Many of the films received from our independent filmmakers address many issues our world faces today that demonstrate the different storylines found within Roots: Injustice, Struggle, Family, Advocacy and Freedom to name a few.   Additionally, the film festival will celebrate the roots of the diverse cultures that make the City of Oakland a wonderful place to live and visit.  We have 5 different venues in various parts of the city that will host our film screenings, workshops and events.

Join us for educational and robust discussions that our various films address at our screenings and workshops; celebrate the different cultures of our filmmakers and great city; and of course enjoy the fabulous after parties. more
