Fourteen-year-old Chato is forced to grow up too soon when immigration agents take his father from his home and deport him to Mexico. In his father's absence, Chato grapples with becoming the man of the house, and struggles to match up to the image of what his mother wants him to be. Chato’s brown skin has everyone wondering when he'll turn delinquent, but he hopes to find a brighter future for himself between the pages of his books.
When thirteen-year-old Ryan, a middle-class white kid caught in the crossfire of his parents' divorce, moves in across the street, he and Chato form a friendship that shakes their low-income Latino neighborhood. Though they're as different as night and day, the painful reality of their broken homes brings the boys face-to-face with the same decision: whether or not to get jumped into a gang.
Chato and Ryan are left navigating this neighborhood, known as the One-Ways, where every street tries to convince them there's only one way they can go.

Chato (14) esta forzado a crecer antes de su tiempo cuando la migra se lleva a su padre de su casa y lo deportan a México. En la ausencia de su padre, Chato lucha para ser el hombre de la casa, y batalla para lograr ser la imagen que su mamá quiere que el sea. La piel morena de Chato tiene a todos preguntándose cuando se va ser un delincuente, pero él espera encontrar un futuro mas brillante entre las paginas de sus libros.
Cuando Ryan (13), un güerito de clase media viviendo entre el fuego cruzado del divorcio de sus padres, viene a vivir al barrio, el y Chato forman una amistad que estremece su comunidad Latina. Aunque son tan diferentes como día y noche, la realidad dolorosa de sus hogares destrozados trae a los niños cara a cara con la misma decisión: si se meten o no a una pandilla.
Chato y Ryan se quedan navegando esta vecindad, conocida como los One-Ways, donde cada calle trata de convencerlos que solamente hay una dirección a donde pueden ir.
