Dr. Martin Luther King Jr – 50 years since assassination. #Familyhood and its #1stSaturdays strategy

On April 4th, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, at the ripe age of 39, was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968 and pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m.
This coming April 4th will mark 50 years since his assassination.

Just a year prior to his death, Dr. King fled the United States to the hills of Ocho Rios, Jamaica and wrote what would become his final manuscript: “Where Do We Go from Here” Chaos or Community?

More than 50 years since writing “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? We are witnessing remnants of its ugly past of segregation and discrimination in America and the world around. Many are asking today “Where Do We Go From Here”?

Because of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dedication and perseverance in fighting injustice, every year, individuals and organizations celebrate his legacy by volunteering in their community on or around his birthday. While volunteering one day a year is good, can we do better?

We believe so. We have joined 1stSaturdays.com -the official monthly volunteer day in schools.

The closing day of our festival, will include 1stSaturdays / school locations. We look forward to learning how Student Government Associations are collaborating with their Parent Teacher Associations and Alumni Associations to increase sustainability from within our communities utilizing our schools as centers for development.

Schools interested in advancing towards #Familyhood should sign up at 1stSaturdays.com.
1stSaturdays.com will map the schools where people can attend and volunteer.

1st Saturdays.com represents the 1st Saturday of every month as the official monthly volunteer/recruitment day at school sites. 1stSaturdays is the ‘do now’ strategy to advance a community towards #Familyhood.

#Familyhood is a “community development strategy that utilizes the location of schools and their inter-generational population as the center for development. ##Familyhood is driven by two main motto’s: 1) The Friends of school motto: which states: “every school shall have a student government association, a Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.” Since many schools do no have these three basic school based organizations, The Friends of School motto utilizes 1st Saturdays to recruit new members to these organizations and to share updates. #Familyhood promotes these three main organizations to collaborate. This collaboration is called #Familyhood. The second motto: 2) is called The Mo’ Better Food motto: which states, ” every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.” 1st Saturdays promotes #Familyhood to come together every month to promote their schools garden, farmers market and future grocery store.
1stSaturdays also welcomes information booths from local businesses/organizations to share resources/opportunities to #Familyhood.
