A compelling look at the impact of music and lyrics on violence and culture, this groundbreaking film draws us inside the walls of America's most notorious prison to witness a raw, unfiltered voice never before heard.
In an unprecedented and inspiring act of creativity, "Through the Walls" is the first feature film created by prisoners. The film features original music and poetry performed by San Quentin State Prison inmates intent on sending out messages of positivity and anti-violence through the prison walls.
A story of change, redemption, and finding light in the darkest of places, people inside and out share their words of hope for positive change -- inmates together with visiting young people, families of crime victims, and fellow perpetrators themselves. Transformation and change breaks through with this mutual act of shared creativity.
Taking a critical look at popular music, negative lyrics, and their impact on urban youth, strategy is set forth to change the way people think. Through discussions and performances, we see, and hear, a vision of inmates and urban youth as never before.
Engaging in both content and style, this film was created by making something from nothing, with only a four person crew and a near impossible set of political and technical obstacles in filming. Literally made with blood and tears, the team lost one of its own in the process.
This is not "Lock Up" nor "Scared Straight," "Through the Walls" is a riveting tale of how we can transform our thoughts and lives through music.
