The 20th Oakland International Film Festival announces 2nd set of opening night films at the Grand Lake Theater – September 15th, 2022. Starting at 9:15 p.m., The short film: “Human Trash”, directed by Aitor Almuedo Esteban, from the country of Spain, tells a story of a boy thrown into a trash container from the future. In his frantic search for the exit, he runs into a mysterious man, who will make him doubt the origin of his own existence. Following, “Human Trash”, a feature documentary featuring Oakland’s own, DeAndre Drake, “Pen To The Pencil”. We all have a destination in life. But before you can reach it we all have to travel the journey. In this documentary you will see the journey DeAndre Drake took, from the streets of Oakland, to prison, to back to the streets of Oakland as an esteemed artist who loves his city. His journey takes us down many roads, turns and detours, and how art became his saving grace that led him to his present place on the map of life. Following “Pen To The Pencil”, the short film: “Push!”, directed by Sanelle Sibanda will close out the evening of screenings at the Grand Lake Theater. “Push!” tells the story of a country fighting an invisible enemy, two immigrant brothers Zugu and Manhe suddenly find themselves face-to-face with the virus, and Zugu must make fast decisions to save a life.
